Mike Theelen decides to leave QLDC

This statement has been received from the QLDC.

"After ten years in the position, Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) Chief Executive Mike Theelen has announced his departure from the organisation in February 2026.

"After completing two full five-year terms in the role, Mr Theelen has chosen not to seek reappointment instead taking the opportunity to take time out to be with family both locally and overseas.

"During his tenure, Mr Theelen has overseen a time of significant change in the district and shaped an organisation that is adapting to and embracing those challenges. In latter years, government reform has shaped a lot of the Council’s work as has responding to the sustained pressures of growth. That period has seen significant investment in social and community facilities and infrastructure such as three waters and roading, with Mr Theelen advocating for the district regionally and nationally.

"Mayor Glyn Lewers said that Mr Theelen would be deeply missed by many across the organisation and his experience would be a significant loss.

“Mike has led this organisation through challenging times across his two five-year terms. His deep knowledge, strong networks, and the respect he has earned over the years have helped achieve outcomes we can all be proud of — most recently, securing the organisation’s position as one of the first to partner with Central Government in a regional deal.”

“I am confident that the strong foundation Mike has laid will serve the next Chief Executive well and provide a solid platform for future success,” said Mayor Lewers.

"The process to appoint a new Chief Executive is underway and will be led by the incoming Mayor with support from the QLDC People & Capability team. News on that appointment will be provided as and when it is available."
