Local ski fields stoked for solid spring season

It may have been a later start to the ski season this year, but for one ski field it will also be a later finish, with Coronet Peak announcing it will stay open until Sunday, October 1, dipping into the next school holidays.

Usually, it closes halfway through September.

Also open into October, Treble Cone and Cardrona.

General manager Laura Hedley says it feels like winter arrived in August this year, and conditions up both mountains are looking great right now.

“Skiing’s been amazing the last few weeks.”

Treble Cone is set to shut October 1, while nearby Cardrona will stay open the longest of the Southern Lakes ski resorts, until Sunday, October 15.

Back in the Whakatipu, the Remarkable Ski Area will stay open until Saturday, October 8.

Remarkable's manager Ross Lawrence says it’s “business as normal” for them, as they’ve had great snow, cold temperatures and great weather the past week.

He reckons the snow's in “good nick” for the rest of the season now.
