Two climbers dead after falling from cliff in The Remarkables

Two climbers have died after falling from the side of a cliff face in The Remarkables mountain range near Queenstown.

A NZSki spokesperson confirmed the incident did not involve its staff or operations.

Police were alerted to two climbers who had fallen from the side of a cliff face at around 11:45am.

The pair were climbing an area known as the Grand Traverse when they fell.

WorkSafe has been notified about the incident and is making initial enquiries.

A search and rescue team and a helicopter were earlier dispatched to find a missing person, who has now been confirmed dead.

Police have recovered the body of one of the climbers and are working to recover the body of the second climber.

Police are also working to notify the victims' next of kin.
