A light aircraft has crashed in the Mackenzie area of South Canterbury.

The plane was reported crashed on rural land between Twizel and Tekapo just after 5pm but there was no word yet on the pilot or any passengers.

Police had been alerted to an aircraft that was overdue about 4.23pm.

Emergency services are at the scene.
