Coronavirus: Live Covid-19 updates in NZ and around the world on 26 March
Police Commissioner Mike Bush says police have spotted people out on the streets not complying with the Covid-19 restrictions overnight.
The country moved to alert level 4 at 11.59pm last night to try and combat the Covid-19 coronavirus, and everyone must stay at home apart from essential workers.
Police were given more powers yesterday to be able to order any person to stop any activity that contributes to the spread of Covid-19.
If you have symptoms of the coronavirus, call the NZ Covid-19 Healthline on 0800 358 5453 (+64 9 358 5453 for international SIMs)
Mike Bush told Morning Report the people police spotted out on the streets were unaware of the rules.
"Those who don't comply, there'll be consequences, it's as simple as that," he said.
But he said police will only prosecute people committing serious breaches.
