Police say a body has been found near a walking track in Dunedin and the death is "unexplained".

Officers were called to the scene in the suburb of Woodhaugh after just before 10am on Sunday, after the find was reported, a police statement said.

"Enquiries are underway to determine the circumstances that lead to the death, which is being treated as unexplained at this time," a spokesperson said.
