Charity Vote - Wakatipu Wilding Conifer Control Group
Wakatipu Wilding Conifer Control Group Inc (WCG) was formed in 2009 in response to local body and community concerns about the rampant spread and serious adverse effects of wilding pines. WCG is led by a highly skilled and passionate volunteer executive who contribute their time and expertise to safeguard our environment from this threat to our landscape and unique biodiversity. WCG co-ordinate the wilding conifer control efforts and obligations of agencies, land owners/managers and engage with the Wakatipu community. WCG also represent Wakatipu in the National Wilding Conifer Control Programme preparing and submitting operational plans to the programme and lobbying for funding.
The work of WCG is interlinked and endorsed by other conservationist groups who recognise that we must continue to act now and up the pace, for the future of our birds, plants, recreational opportunities, biodiversity and the unique scenery of the Wakatipu. Additionally, as wilding pines grow larger and spread further, the risk of dangerous wildfires is increased. There is no better time than now to get rid of New Zealand’s number one plant pest, wilding conifers.
