Road snow warnings updated as cold snap hits
Local authorities have issued warnings for roads across the region as a cold snap sweeps over much of the country.
There have been snow flurries in Queenstown and Cromwell this morning with the latest forecast from MetService saying snow can be expected to low levels, heavy at times above 300 metres, throughout the day.
Motorists can expect snow to affect roads over the Lindis Pass and the Crown Range, and into Milford Sound. State Highway One north of Dunedin is also predicted to be affected by snow throughout the day.
The Queenstown Lakes District Council has updated its winter road report, encouraging motorists to "please drive to the conditions".
"As you've probably already spotted from out your windows, snow is currently falling across the district," the council says in a post just after 10am.
"Whilst a good snow dump means powder days are incoming, it also means some of our roads are currently affected by poor conditions.
"If you're in the car today, please drive to the conditions and be sure to carry chains (and know how to fit them)."
The council has published a graphic that provides details on elevations of places across the district.
At the Central Otago District Council, it is a similar message, with snow falling in the Māniatoto, Manuherekia and Roxburgh areas.
Staff are asking motorists to "slow down".
Meanwhile, further north, approximately 50 people had an unexpected stay at Arthurs Pass village Sunday night, with State Highway 73 closed either side due to heavy snow.
