Crux reaches publishing milestone – 3 million page views

Crux has today passed the 3 million page view mark, with readers spending an average of two and half minutes on each of our pages.

The Crux project was launched on May 3 in 2018, less than 4 years ago. Since then, the site has grown to become the leading source of strong, public interest journalism in Queenstown, Wānaka and Cromwell.

It's important to understand that there are two distinct types of journalism. Journalism of Record simply documents what has happened. Public Interest Journalism asks why things happened and holds power to account. While many local news outlets practice journalism of record with a high reliance on media releases and “the official line”, Crux is firmly and proudly a practitioner of Public Interest Journalism.

Recently our daily audience has been approaching the 10,000 mark, and our reach on social media is already up to three times greater than all other local news media put together. Our audience is especially strong in the crucial 35 - 44 age group, with the gender split being around 55% female and 45% male.

With major publishing projects in the pipeline for later this year we are expecting more dramatic audience growth as local news media address the challenges of a new publishing landscape.

We are proud of our strong journalism but also of our work to build community bonds and help explain complex issues so that residents can form informed opinions on local issues.

Our award-winning Southern Lens video series reached one million viewers over 50 episodes and this year will see the launch of our next major video project – Deep South.

Most importantly, each and every audience member likes and trusts Crux. Our latest reader survey showed over 75% of readers ranked Crux as either Good or Excellent, by far the highest ranking of all local and national media platforms.

Crux is pioneering a new business model that will feature community involvement and highlight the importance of local democracy. We launched local advertising on Crux earlier this year and every dollar of advertising revenue goes towards supporting our local journalists.
