Big changes for Crux to be announced Thursday June 13th

Everybody will be aware of the crisis facing New Zealand's news publishers and media generally. The recent closures and cutbacks involving Today FM, Newshub and TVNZ news have also involved specific regional cutbacks (or "re-organisations") by both Stuff and the Herald/NZME.

It does not really matter whether you respect or even like the work of journalists - we do an important job and society will go backwards very quickly if we disappear.

It is not our job to be popular but to inform our community so that you can make informed decisions on who leads us and how our lives are shaped. Part of our job is also to recognise and celebrate genuine local success stories.

For the first time in New Zealand history it is actually possible that public interest journalism, that is independent of the public relations/comms and Government publicity machines, is at the start of a genuine extinction event.

Crux is responding to this situation with some bold, positive and innovative changes that we'll be announcing on Thursday June 13th at an invitation only event courtesy of The Rees Hotel, Queenstown. A public announcement will also be made at the same time as our Thursday evening event.

If you'd like to attend our event at The Rees - 6.00 pm on Thursday June 13th - to be held in one of their exclusive lakefront villas (main image above) - please email [email protected]

Space is limited and priority will be given to Crux subscribers, elected QLDC and CODC councillors, community leaders and local business owners. Our special guest is former Stuff Commercial Director Steve Hutton.

Both Steve and Crux Managing Editor Peter Newport will outline the current state of play with the NZ Government, the NZ advertising sector, Google, Meta and the NZ news publishing industry.

We'll also announce how Crux intends to respond, adapt and grow in this new landscape - without putting our existing strong local news content behind a paywall. We value the 300,000 page views a month we get from our 40,000 local readers.

We like that old saying - "When the going gets tough, the tough get going."
