Wānaka given four weeks to have say on McDonald's plans
It has been eight months since McDonald's revealed its plans for its first restaurant in Wānaka, and now members of the public can officially have their say on those plans.
The Queenstown Lakes District Council has publicly notified the fast-food chain's resource consent application and there is a four-week window for submissions on it to be received.
McDonald's is seeking go-ahead for a single-storey, 445-square-metre building on the Wānaka-Luggate road, adjacent to the new roundabout where State Highway Six makes a turn towards Lake Hāwea and the West Coast.
It would be part of a new development called Mount Iron Junction.
The restaurant would seat 75 diners, have a drive-through, and be open around the clock.
But some have been vocal in their opposition to the fast-food chain's proposed plans.
It is Ms Morrison's view McDonald's "does not belong" in Wānaka, which she calls "our beautiful home".
She raises concerns about the links between the multinational and food waste and pollution, as well as potential negative impacts for smaller, local food businesses in the town.
McDonald's had requested that its application be publicly notified.
The company has already received approval from the Overseas Investment Office to buy land at Mount Iron Junction.
In its application to the investment office, it says it is working towards opening a restaurant there by 2026.
Meanwhile a council spokesperson advises submissions on McDonald's resource consent application can be completed on this form and emailed to [email protected] by Friday, August 9.
