Truck piled high with dead deer stuns motorists

A truck piled high with dead deer was an unexpected sight for motorists on State Highway Six on Wednesday afternoon.

The carcasses were extending out over the top of the truck's trailer as it traveled between Queenstown and Cromwell at approximately 1.30pm.

The laden vehicle appeared to be operated by Wānaka-based Alpine Helicopters.

Alpine Helicopters has been approached for comment.

The company is known to have pioneered the use of aircraft to hunt deer and other animals.

It has been involved in aerial operations to help control excessively high populations of introduced species.

In 2020, the company famously withdrew from a controversial thar cull aiming for 'zero density' in prominent South Island national parks.
