Strong winds and heavy rain forecast from Sunday night through to Tuesday

The MetService has issued an Orange warning for the Otago lakes and rivers that could include severe conditions over the next 48 hours.

The warning forecasts 150 to 200 mm of rain about the main divide, and 90 to 120 mm within 15 km farther east. Peak rates of 15 to 25 mm/h expected about the divide. 

The heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous.

There's also a strong wind watch in place where Northwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.
