Skyline silent on potential stormwater fail as rip-up of carpark reported

by Kim Bowden and Lauren Pattemore - Oct 27, 2023

Crux has been told contractors working for Skyline at the base of its Queenstown gondola have ripped up part of a carpark built with inadequate stormwater infrastructure in place.

Crux has put the claim to both the tourism company and the Queenstown Lakes District Council this week.

In response, QLDC recovery manager Bill Nicoll says the council's monitoring and enforcement team is investigating the matter with regard to relevant resource consents.

"While the investigation is underway, QLDC is not in a position to provide further comment."

Skyline has not responded.

It is unclear the exact location of the worksite in question, and what impact, if any, a stormwater failure may have had during the September rain event that led to the declaration of a local state of emergency after flooding and debris swept down the gondola hillside and into urban streets and the Queenstown Cemetery.

Crux is continuing to ask both Skyline and the council for updates on work to stabilise the hillside, which the council says is still hazardous.
