Sewage overflow in Albert Town may reach Clutha river

Jan 10, 2024

The Queenstown Lakes District Council is dealing with what appears to be a major sewage problem in Albert Town.

The following statement has been issued by the the QLDC.

"Council officers and contractors are responding urgently to a wastewater leak at the Albert Town pump station.

"A suspected problem this afternoon with the pump pressure main (that would normally pump wastewater to the treatment plant near Wānaka Airport) has resulted in wastewater flowing downhill adjacent to State Highway 6.

"A crew is currently onsite to confirm the full nature of the problem and the quickest way to resolve it.

"It is not yet known if any wastewater has reached the Clutha River Mata-Au but Council is taking all possible steps to minimise this possibility.

"Further updates will follow when available."
