Sewage spills from Queenstown treatment plant

A pond at Queenstown's wastewater treatment facility is overflowing, sending only partially-treated sewage towards the Shotover River.

A local who came across the spill on an outing this morning has told Crux it is "absolutely disgusting".

They are calling for authorities to issue a warning to others to stay away.

The flow from pond three at the problem-plagued facility has channeled out a path overland under a fence and across a road.

A stand of vegetation separates it from the river.

Queenstown Lakes District Council staff and contractors are onsite, but for now it is unclear what has gone wrong.

It is the latest in a series of malfunctions at the council facility.

Crux has this morning approached both the QLDC and the Otago Regional Council for more information.
