Q'town's Cool Wakushima wins snowboard gold at Aspen

From Snow Sports NZ:

Aspen, Colorado, USA (27 February 2021) – Cool Wakushima (Queenstown) has won gold in snowboard Big Air at the Aspen stop of the US Revolution tour this morning.

Wakushima landed a huge double wildcat and a stylish frontside 720 to take the win by an impressive 17 points.

“Today started off little bit chilly and breezy, I had four runs to warm up and saw lots of athletes struggling with speed, so we came up with double wildcat as best option, since it is a trick that sends me the biggest. It wasn’t my first time stomping this in my competition run but I am still stoked that I landed the trick.”

Wakushima won convincingly with a score of 179.50, 17 points ahead of silver medallist Kanami Okuyama (JPN) and 37.75 points ahead of bronze medallist Courtney Rummel (USA).

This is Wakushima’s second medal at the Aspen Open stop of the US Revolution tour – she claimed the silver medal in slopestyle on Thursday.

The FIS Freeski and Snowboard World Championships will be held in Aspen from the 7th – 16th of March. Wakushima explained that she has learnt a lot from this week about the course, her snowboarding and her mental skills, and she is really looking forward to World Champs.
