QLDC call extraordinary meeting to strip Niki Gladding of council roles
The Queenstown Lakes District Council has called an Extraordinary Meeting for 1.00 pm next Tuesday to consider actions against Councillor Niki Gladding. The move follows the publication of details from a secret council workshop last week to discuss the Shotover sewage crisis.
Councillor Gladding's participation in a Crux podcast is also being used as a reason for her to lose her committee roles, which will include the loss of additional council salary linked to those committee roles.
The full story, and a renewed link to the Crux podcast will be published shortly on The Friday Edition for Crux subscribers.
Here's the main agenda item that councillors will be asked to vote on - the other options include doing nothing and initiating a full Code of Conduct Investigation.
Option 1 Discharge Councillor Gladding from the Infrastructure Committee and Audit, Risk & Finance Committees under LGA Schedule 7 Clause 31(1)
Advantages:
- Responds to clear and intentional breaches of the Code of Conduct relating to the sharing of information provided during a public-excluded briefing on the conclusive grounds of LGOIMA s6(c) - to not prejudice ongoing legal proceedings before the Court and mediation.
- Reduces the risk of further deliberate breaches of confidentiality and the Code of Conduct by the elected member in question. Allows Councillors on those Committees to collectively make decisions about how to communicate information to its community.
- Does not incur additional cost by pursuing a formal Code of Conduct investigation
- Enables new appointments to both committees and the position of Deputy Chair for the Infrastructure Committee of members that have not breached the Code of Conduct
- Responds to request for removal from the Audit, Finance & Risk Committee Chair
- Aligned with powers of Council under the LGA Schedule 7 clause 31(1)
Disadvantages:
- None identified
