Police close Milford Rd after gunshots fired at DOC campsite

Police have been forced to close the popular tourist route into Milford Sound this morning after reports of a gunman fleeing there.

In a statement early this afternoon Southland Commander Inspector Mike Bowman Area says police closed State Highway 94 at Chain Bay due to an incident at Te Anau  where a firearm was discharged just after 9am.

A person reportedly fired shots at a vehicle at the Henry Creek Campsite beside Lake Te Anau, before leaving the campsite and driving towards Milford Sound.

The driver of the vehicle was located by police a short time later and was taken into custody without further incident.

No one else is sought in relation to the matter and the road is now open.

The 35-year-old man will be appearing in court later today to face firearms charges.

Police are asking to hear from any additional witnesses to the incident, and can be contacted on 105, with the reference number P055861483.
