One dead after single-car crash on SH6 near Kingston

Police have confirmed one person is dead following a crash that shut State Highway Six just south of Kingston this morning.

A member of the public alerted police to the incident at approximately 4.30am after coming across a single vehicle that had crashed at the southern end of Lake Wakatipu.

In a statement just after midday police say, "Sadly, the sole occupant died at the scene".

The road was closed for several hours but has since reopened and is operating at one lane.

Police say inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are underway.
