Mayor's son sentenced after second drink driving offence

The son of Central Otago District Mayor Tim Cadogan has been convicted and sentenced in the Queenstown district court last week for a drink driving offence.

Court documents show Benjamin George Cadogan has been sentenced by community magistrate Sally O'Brien to 40 hours of community work after being caught drink driving in Queenstown in April.

The 31-year-old electrician, of Cromwell, was charged with driving a vehicle on Lake Avenue with 90 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

The legal limit is 50 milligrams.

Open Justice reporter Guy Williams says after his sentencing Mr Cadogan said he had made a poor decision after drinking two beers on an empty stomach.

"It was bad judgement on my part," Mr Cadogan told Mr Williams.

Mr Williams says Mr Cadogan's lawyer asked Ms O'Brien to consider community work over any driving disqualification as Mr Cadogan is self-employed and needs to travel for work as well as to support his young son.

Mr Cadogan has another drink driving offence dating to 2011, Mr Williams reports.

Mayor Cadogan has been approached for comment.
