Kawarau Gorge bike trail work moves to bridges

From the Southern Lakes Trails Trust.

"Southern Lakes Trails (SLT) is pleased to see contractors back on site at the Kawarau Gorge Trail, with the project now entering its final construction phase.

As with any major infrastructure project, the most complex work has been in the foundations. With less than one kilometre of trail left to be formed, attention is now turning to the installation of key connecting structures, including suspension bridges, bluff bridges and fixed bridges. Much of this infrastructure has been prefabricated off-site and is ready for installation.

From next month, the final surface coating will be applied to the 13-kilometre backcountry section of the trail using helicopter access. Once surfacing is complete, safety barriers and signage will be installed ahead of the trail opening.

In December, SLT facilitated information sessions with anticipated partner businesses whose operations may be impacted by the opening of the Kawarau Gorge Trail. These sessions were well received, with many businesses expressing interest in supporting a user-supported model for the region’s growing network of off-road trails.

The Kawarau Gorge Trail forms a vital link in the wider trail network, connecting Queenstown Airport through Central Otago and contributing to the region’s reputation as a premier destination for exploring the unique landscapes and history of the lower South Island.

Trail Opening Date is still to be advised.
