Ice rink makes helmets compulsory after teen dies

An icing skating rink in Christchurch is making helmets compulsory for all skaters attending its public sessions after a teen died from a head injury sustained in a fall there.

Thirteen-year-old Kymani Hiley-Hetaraka fell and hit her head while ice skating during a school trip to the Alpine Ice Sports Centre on Tuesday.

She was taken to hospital in a serious condition, but her injuries were not survivable.

Her tangi will be held at Haeata Community Campus, where she went to school, tomorrow.

The Alpine Ice Sports Centre has now made changes to its health and safety procedures.

"Customer safety is a priority at Alpine Ice," it says in a social media post announcing the changes.

"From Monday 5 August, all customers are required to wear a helmet while attending our public skating sessions.

"Helmets are provided free of charge by Alpine, or skaters may prefer to bring their own well-fitting cycle helmet.

"We appreciate your support and understanding."

A WorkSafe investigation into the incident is underway.

The ice rink remained closed last week.

In a public statement, Haeata Community Campus principal Dr Peggy Burrows says Kymani was a "beloved member" of the school community.

"Kymani was a vibrant and cherished ākonga who touched the lives of many with her kindness, aroha and beautiful spirit."
