Highway closed out of Alexandra after fatal crash

Updated 12.50pm as police report one person has died following the crash

A section of highway connecting Alexandra to Roxburgh in Central Otago is closed as police respond to a serious crash that has killed one person.

Police were alerted to the single-vehicle crash on State Highway 8 at approximately 10.50am.

The highway is now closed between Conroys Road and Earnscleugh Road while the serious crash unit examines the scene.

A detour is in place.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the area and take the alternate route."

Earlier this morning police reported that initial indications at the site suggested serious injuries.
