Heavy rain warning and wind watch for Southern Lakes

Met Service has issued an orange heavy rain warning for Queenstown and Wānaka starting at 2.00 pm today - Sunday September 1.

There is also a strong wind watch for wider district, including Central Otago running until 9.00 am tomorrow Monday September 2.

The heavy rain warning runs from 2.00 pm today until 9.00 am Monday morning.

Heavy Rain Warning - Orange

Period: 

19hrs from 2pm Sun, 1 Sep - 9am Mon, 2 Sep

Area: 

The headwaters of the Otago Lakes and Rivers.

Forecast: 

Expect 90 to 120 mm of rain about the main divide, and 60 to 80 mm within 15 km farther east. Peak rates of 10 to 20 mm/h expected this evening and overnight with thunderstorms possible, especially about the divide. Freezing level about 2000 metres. Minimal chance of upgrading to a Red Warning.

 

Impact: 

Streams and rivers may rise rapidly.

 

Action: 

Clear your drains and gutters to prepare for heavy rain. Avoid low-lying areas and drive cautiously.

 

Strong Wind Watch

Period: 

21hrs from noon Sun, 1 Sep - 9am Mon, 2 Sep

Area: 

Otago, excluding north Otago, Southland and Fiordland

Forecast: 

Northwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.
Note, the winds tending northerly later on Monday with further severe gales possible. Moderate chance of upgrading to a Warning.
