Darren Rewi rejects $5,000 Rod Drury donation
Statement from Darren Rewi:
“Today, after a constructive conversation, I was offered a donation from Rod Drury towards my mayoral campaign.
“I have known Rod for more than five years as one of Mana Tāhuna’s earliest supporters, particularly through his backing of our conservation work at Waiwhakaata – Lake Hayes.
“I deeply value Rod’s long-standing commitment to our community and the support he has shown for both conservation outcomes and his own journey into te ao Māori.
“I consider him a friend, and I acknowledge the importance of strong relationships between community leadership and the private sector.
“However, after careful reflection, I have chosen to decline the donation. My campaign is built on the principles of independence, transparency, and integrity, and I want to ensure there can be no question of outside influence over the decisions I make if elected Mayor.
“I remain grateful for Rod’s ongoing contribution to our district, and I look forward to continuing to work alongside him and others across our community on the kaupapa of conservation, housing, and future-focused leadership.”
