Candidate statement: Nicola King, QLDC Wānaka–Upper Clutha Ward
Statement received from Nicola King, a QLDC Wānaka–Upper Clutha Ward councillor candidate.
"Nicola King, candidate for the Wānaka–Upper Clutha Ward, is outlining her vision and priorities as the local body elections approach, focused on her core values of local heart and future mind.
Born, bred, and now raising her own family in Wānaka, Nicola says her motivation is simple: “our home is special, not just because of the mountains, lakes, and seasons, but because of the community that lives here. We need to ensure that the character of where we are remains as we navigate growth in the future. I believe I can help ensure that Wānaka’s voice is heard.”
Local heart.
Nicola highlights that trust in council is a key issue. “From procurement and financial management challenges to poor communication and accountability, the council has room to improve. My focus would be strengthening how the council works internally, tighter financial and procurement controls, better CEO oversight, and improving staff culture. Externally, through early and transparent engagement with the community.
Our council should work together for the common good, with honesty, integrity, and respect for our values and resources. That’s how we rebuild trust and strengthen the bond between council and community.”
Future mind.
Nicola’s second priority is ensuring the district is future-ready. “Housing affordability is a serious issue, our population is one of the fastest growing in the country, infrastructure is aging, health care is lacking, and climate change is increasing risks. These challenges need smarter solutions, not just bigger budgets. We need leadership that when planning ahead, collaborates widely, and protects both people and place.”
Her ideas include supporting innovative housing solutions, strengthening partnerships with iwi, community groups, and businesses, and prioritising infrastructure renewal and climate resilience in long-term planning.
Nicola believes her skills in communication, collaboration, and community connection make her well placed to contribute to the council. “Council works best when it listens. To each other, to experts, and to the community. My commitment is to bring people together and focus on protecting what makes this place special, while preparing for the future.”
Nicola brings a strong mix of professional and community experience to the table. With a Master’s in Sustainable Business and a background in marketing for Lake Wānaka Tourism, she combines strategic thinking with practical skills in communication and engagement. She has contributed her expertise on the boards of the Southern Lakes Arts Festival and the Mt Aspiring College Foundation, and founded Sustainable Ladies, a growing network that connects and empowers women working in sustainability.
Nicola is especially focused on engaging people in their 30s and younger, who make up the largest demographic in the Wānaka-Upper Clutha ward but are the least represented at the voting booth. Her campaign is an example of how she gets stuck in, builds connections, and takes positive action to strengthen her community."
