Candidate statement from Niki Gladding
Statement received from Councillor Niki Gladding:
"Just a few quick words from me on my ‘flip’. We won’t call it a ‘flop’ just yet.
I decided today to run as a councillor candidate in the Wanaka-Upper Clutha Ward. It’s been very much a last-minute decision.
I obviously came out of the gates early stating that I wouldn’t run for QLDC again. My reasons were sound, and I think they still are… If Mayor Lewers and I are both re-elected, then it probably won’t be a comfortable ride – for anyone. But I’ve taken a leap of faith because I feel like the district is ready for change. And if I’m wrong? Well, politics can be tough and we just have to get on with it for the good of the district.
I considered trying for a role on the ORC – right up until today. But I can’t be in Dunedin every couple weeks – not just yet. Cr Forbes gave me a run down of her schedule on the phone today and I realized I couldn’t do justice to the role – whereas others will. That’s a key reason for my change of heart.
But a range of things came into it including excellent candidates yet to put themselves forward, unfinished business, and (let’s be honest) paying the bills. The important thing is I still have plenty to give if the community wants me back in the room. It’s obviously the voters’ call.
Finally, I want to say a quick thanks to the people who didn’t stop asking me to change my mind. You gave me the confidence to have another crack at it – thank you!"
