Burst water main shuts Wānaka's high school

A burst water main has forced a Wānaka school to close for the day.

Mount Aspiring College has sent its students home early this afternoon as there is no water at the school, meaning taps aren't flowing or toilets flushing.

A message on the school's Facebook page says a broken water main on Beaumont Street is the culprit.

Crux understands Queenstown Lakes District Council staff are at the site, along with council contractors Veolia and members of the local fire brigade.

It is not clear at this stage exactly what has gone wrong with the water pipe, or how far away a fix to it may be, but the council has been approached for more information.

While students who usually catch a school bus home are being supervised at the school, others have been allowed to make their way home or be picked up by parents.

"We will update you again shortly with further details and are hopeful the matter will be resolved in time for school tomorrow," the school's message says.
