University of Otago clock tower damaged in protest
One person has been arrested after a demonstration at the University of Otago turned nasty today.
A police spokesperson says Police were aware of a protest, relating to the ongoing situation in Gaza, occurring today at the university.
“Police respect the lawful right to protest and were monitoring the event.
“About 1pm Police were notified that damage had been sustained at the clock tower and it was locked down as a precaution.
“One person has been arrested in relation to the incident and charges will be considered.”
University of Otago Vice-Chancellor Grant Robertson said the protesters’ actions crossed a line.
“Peaceful protest has been a long tradition at the University of Otago – Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka. It is important that students and staff are able to express their views and protest within the law.
“However, there is no place for vandalism or disorderly actions, particularly when the safety of others including staff and students is put at risk. This protest crossed that line. This is against the kaupapa of our community and is not welcome.”
