A new community space for Wānaka youth takes shape
Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is shortly to start work on the transformation of the old Mitre-10 building in Wānaka.
Once a regular haunt for DIY enthusiasts, the previous Mitre-10 building on Plantation Road will become a new youth, community and sports facility. Once completed, there’ll be two multi-use indoor courts, a separate studio that could be used for dance, yoga and fitness classes, or as a meeting space, and dedicated areas for Kahu Youth and Aspiring Gymsports.
QLDC’s Sport and Recreation Manager Simon Battrick said “Redesigning an existing commercial building for varied community uses has presented some challenges but we’re really looking forward to creating an awesome additional space for recreation close to town, as well as a much-needed home for local clubs and groups,”.
Once completed, the complex will include two multi-use indoor courts, a separate studio that could be used for dance, yoga and fitness classes, or as a meeting space, and dedicated areas for Kahu Youth and Aspiring Gymsports.
Work is expected to continue until the end of July, with Aspiring Gymsports likely to have earlier access. Naylor Love will be the lead contractor for the fitout, with a budget or approximately $4.2 million to complete the project.
