Unions' mega strikes: Where they'll be in our region
Unions representing teachers, nurses, doctors and other health workers are preparing to strike as members walk off the job demanding better pay and working conditions tomorrow.
The public sector multi-union strikes are under the branding Save Our Services and involve the PPTA, NZEI, NZNO, ASMS, PSA and NZPFU.
Nationwide, more than 118,000 people are striking across seven days with large strike action on Thursday. This includes:
- 40,000 Primary school teachers, principals, learning support, and support workers. Calling for better pay and classroom support.
- 36,000 NZNO nurses, midwives, and healthcare assistants. Striking over patient safety concerns, unsafe staffing, the recruitment freeze, and a lack of commitment to hiring nurse graduates (11am to 3pm, October 23).
- 21,000 secondary and area teachers from the Post-Primary Teachers Association have been participating in rolling partial strikes, culminating in a full national full national strike on October 23. Striking for below inflation pay increase; specialist teacher and support staff shortages; conditions to maintain teacher staffing levels.
- 11,500 Allied health workers (Over 60 professions including physiotherapists, social workers, health assistants etc). Striking for better pay and staffing levels.
- 4000 Senior Doctors and Dentists. (11am to 3pm, October 23)
- 3500 PSA Mental health and public health nurses, and mental health assistants striking for better pay and safe staff levels on October 23.
- 1700 PSA workers in Policy, IT, and other back office health support striking for better pay and due to pay inequality.
- 400 NZNO Prison/Corrections nurses and healthcare assistants to strike for less on-call work, more staff to be rostered on shift, and an improved pay offer. (6am to 10pm October 23)
- 50 home support workers from the West Coast striking.
- 1200 ACC workers protesting the government's funding of public sector services. (6am to 8pm October 23)
- Firefighters went on strike on October 17 over wages, lack of staff, working excessive overtime, the dire/failing state of fire appliances.
Where the strike action is:
- Cromwell 11am-1pm, gather under “The Fruit” to picket - CANCELLED due to weather
- Alexandra 11am-1pm, picket at Molyneux Park - CANCELLED due to weather
- Wānaka 11am-12pm, meet outside Kaiwhakapai for a community rally. There will be petition signing and 1:1 engagement with members of the community. - CANCELLED due to weather
- Queenstown 11am-1pm - St Peter's Church.
