Firefighters diverting floodwater from Wānaka homes
Firefighting crews are working to pump water away from private properties in Wānaka as rain continues to fall.
A large amount of water is pooling on Aubrey Road several hundred metres east from its intersection with Anderson Road.
Police are also at the scene slowing traffic.
Meanwhile a large pond of water has also accumulated in a dip on small side road Mount Roy Terrace, where two fire trucks are stationed and water is being pumped up and onto Aubrey Road.
The water is then flowing across the road and onto a vacant section, where a container belonging to Trident Homes now appears to be marooned by floodwaters.
The Queenstown Lakes District Council says it is aware of the issue and has contractors onsite.
"Our priority is working to fully understand the cause and origin of the flooding, and its impact on residents," a council spokesperson says.
Problems with stormwater management have been ongoing at the Aubrey and Anderson Roads intersection, with the council announcing a fix to persistent pooling of water after rain at the location a year ago.
However the council is confident today's issue is unrelated to that.
"At this stage, the issue appears to be unrelated to previous intermittent flooding at the Anderson Road-Aubrey Road intersection, and is some distance away from the new roundabout," the spokesperson says.
