Drama as multiple medical helicopters approach Dunedin hospital

Four people with serious injuries, and one with less serious injuries, are about to arrive at Dunedin Hospital in a formation of medical helicopters.

A total of five choppers attended a car crash in Makarora on the Haast road this afternoon – and four are flying only seconds apart in a dash to Dunedin.

The four medical helicopters tracked by Flight Radar 24 en route to Dunedin from Makarora this afternoon.

Crux has asked hospital authorities there how they will handle the unusual mass arrival of causalities by air.

A large contingent of emergency services attended the serious road accident in Makarora township and police say the Haast road is closed.

The accident involved two cars and happened at the intersection of Rata Road and SH6 in Makarora.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and expect delays.

St John advised Crux a short time ago that the final two patients in a moderate condition have been transported – one via helicopter to Dunedin hospital and one via ambulance to Dunstan hospital.
