QLDC: Harbourmaster resignation "disappointing" - trying to find solution

Following our story this morning on the resignation of the Wānaka harbourmaster, QLDC provided Crux with this unsourced statement. The statement does not address the issue that we raised of Deputy Mayor Calum MacLeod having warned the council of problems for the past six to eight months.

"The resignation of the Wānaka harbourmaster is obviously disappointing, especially at this time of year."

"However, we are working to ensure there is no loss of service in the Upper Clutha over the busy summer period."

"A focus for the contractor has been to build resilience into the team for any unforeseen staff issues, particularly in the light of COVID-19, in order to ensure users of our lakes and rivers adhere to relevant water safety rules and bylaws."

"It is also important to remember that the role of the harbourmaster is different to that of Coastguard and other emergency services. In an emergency situation people should call 111 or, for non-emergency Coastguard matters such as a broken-down vessel, call *500."
