One dead, one injured in Wanaka jet boat crash

Police have now confirmed one death in this afternoon's jet boat crash on the Clutha River near Wanaka airport.

Media reports claim that the boat was competing in an official racing event.

Here is the latest police update.

"Police and emergency services are responding to a jet boat crash on the Clutha River near Hawea, Central Otago Lakes District.

Initial reports stated that two people were injured.  We can now confirm that one person has suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

The other person has received moderate to serious injuries and have been taken by helicopter to hospital.

The Swift Water Rescue team have been called out to assist with the scene examination and Maritime New Zealand are also on their way.

The area where the crash has occurred has been difficult to access, and emergency services will take some time at the scene to establish the cause."
